Stroudwater Village Association is dedicated to stewardship of the natural, social and historic character which makes Stroudwater unique. We want to create a community that celebrates, preserves and enhances Stroudwater's historic, quiet community, buildings and waterways. We want to be a community where children play and people walk safely down the streets.
Neighborhood boundaries:
Stroudwater boundaries are everything west of the railroad tracks to the Westbrook border with "guest membership to persons and areas which share one or more of our goals, projects or just interested.
Major Activities:
The
Stroudwater Village Association's activities flow directly from our mission of
preserving the integrity of the
village; its historic past as well as its current use. We do this
through research, advocacy and collaboration with other institutions in the
area. We monitor land use, new and old buildings, water and air quality. We
are currently focused on upgrading the Stroudwater River so it can once again
be a swimmable and a source of recreation. We advocate for safety on our
streets for all pedestrians but particularly our children and elderly as well
as those in motor vehicles. We have focused on sidewalks where none existed,
cross walks because we have only one, speed enforcement as we are seen as a
major throughway. We aim to protect our environment from unfettered
encroachment of commuter vehicle traffic, the airport, the trash plant and the
potential shopping center in Westbrook. We do these things through advocating
for solutions which are best for everyone, devising solutions that are not
unnecessarily prohibitive to change while not
losing our identity. In addition, research and gathering of historic material
and stories, is a major function of the association. A social aspect is our
Stroudwater Village Day, a day of fun and food for everyone. We honor our
citizens who have contributed to the preservation of the village provided in
conjunction with the Stroudwater Baptist Church, our annual pancake breakfast,
our sometimes calendar of Stroudwater photos, an occasional newsletter. Most
importantly, the Stroudwater Village Association tries to keep the residents
of this village informed of what is happening at the city level as well as in
the immediate neighborhood.
2010 saw the SVA continue to hold its annual meeting in two parts. The first as a Pancake Breakfast was held on Saturday January 30 at which members were able to pick up committee annual reports, and obtain absentee ballots for trustees and officers. The event was a huge success; 75 families joined us for pancakes and socializing with old and new neighbors and meeting and talking with State Rep Anne Haskell and State Senator Justin Alfond. The children attending created a colorful mural depicting many snow animals, took girl scout cookie orders and toddled about. Part 2 of the Annual meeting occurred on Tuesday evening February 2. Those present elected trustees for a two year term, and a new Vice President and Secretary. Reports from standing committees were provided by their chairs. These committee reports are available on request: jetport, Land and Water Use, Historic, Traffic and Safety, Village Gathering and Membership. Public Services Diretor, Michael Bobinsky addressed the issues of the safety features of the Westbrook St sidewalks as well as the delays in implementing the left turn lanes on Congress Street. Mr. Bobinsky was honored as Civil Employee of the Year by the Association
