NEWS RELEASES:

Neighborhood Associations

Mission Statement:
To provide a forum to involve all community stake holders in the process of preserving and furthering our neighborhood quality of life.

A New Vision

We have an opportunity, when starting a new organization, to improve upon the models of the past. Traditionally, neighborhoods have been defined by maps, rigid lines on paper that define us. The facts of our  lives are more than rigid lines. We cross boundaries all the time and identify with places in which we: work,  shop, play, study, pray, in addition to the place where we hang our hat.

Our organization respects the reality of the complex patterns of our lives. We welcome people who identify with this area from a variety of entry points, to consider themselves members of this community.

We call this, A Community of Interest

USM Our Core

The University of Southern Maine represents the core community of interest for the University Neighborhood Organization.

The USM community is far reaching and includes faculty, staff, students, visitors and others who may come into the Oakdale, USM and surrounding neighborhoods on a regular basis or stay for discrete periods of time, and therefore may not recognize the “equity” they hold in the neighborhood. UNO exist to bring these diverse  voices together to create and sustain a warm, inviting and inclusive community without borders.

We are committed to working with our University neighbors to maintain and enhance the quality of our neighborhoods. We want to assure them that they do have a stake in our collective welfare. They too are members of this community and we are reaching out to them to join with us in creating the best, warmest, and  most neighborly area in the City of Portland.
